What Does a BCBA Do? A Day in the Life at Imagination ABA

Updated: 3 days ago

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is the clinical backbone of an ABA therapy program, though their day-to-day work often happens behind the scenes of the sessions families actually see.

Clinical Responsibilities

A BCBA conducts assessments, writes and updates individualized treatment plans, analyzes session data to track progress, and supervises the RBTs delivering direct therapy. They're the ones who decide whether a strategy is working and adjust course when it isn't, rather than continuing a plan on autopilot.

The Education and Credentialing Behind the Role

Becoming a BCBA requires a master's degree in behavior analysis, psychology, or a related field, completion of specific graduate coursework approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, and 1,500 to 2,000 supervised fieldwork hours depending on the supervision model, followed by passing the BCBA certification exam. The credential must be renewed every two years, including continuing education requirements, keeping practitioners current with evolving research.

A Day That Balances Clinical and Human Work

On a typical day, a BCBA might review data from the previous day's sessions to check whether a goal needs adjusting, conduct a parent training session to teach a new strategy, observe an RBT working directly with a child to provide coaching, and write or update a treatment plan based on recent progress. This mix of data analysis, teaching, and direct family communication is what makes the role both clinically rigorous and deeply relationship-driven.

Working Directly With Families

Beyond the clinical work, a BCBA regularly meets with parents for training and updates, translating data and progress into practical guidance families can use at home. At Imagination ABA Therapy, this ongoing relationship between BCBA and family is central to how we work, not an occasional check-in.
