Understanding the Autism Spectrum: A Guide for New Jersey Families

Updated: 5 days ago

Every family's journey with autism is unique and finding the right support can feel overwhelming. At Imagination ABA Therapy, we work alongside New Jersey families every day to make that journey clearer, more hopeful, and more supported.

What You Need to Know

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts socially, and experiences the world around them. The word “spectrum” is intentional: no two autistic children present the same way. Some children speak in full sentences by age two, while others communicate primarily through gestures, pictures, or assistive technology. Some children are highly sensitive to sounds, textures, or lights, while others actively seek out sensory input. This wide range is exactly why a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy rarely works, and why individualized treatment planning matters so much.

The Three Levels of Support

The DSM-5, the diagnostic manual used by clinicians in the United States, describes autism in terms of three levels of support needed: Level 1 (requiring support), Level 2 (requiring substantial support), and Level 3 (requiring very substantial support). These levels describe how much support a person needs with social communication and with managing restricted or repetitive behaviors, not a general measure of how “severe” someone's autism is. A child's level of support can also shift over time as they develop new skills and strategies.

Common Characteristics Parents Often Notice

While every autistic child is different, families and pediatricians often notice patterns in two core areas. The first is social communication: differences in eye contact, back-and-forth conversation, understanding facial expressions or tone of voice, and building relationships with peers. The second is restricted or repetitive behaviors: strong preferences for routine, intense focus on specific interests, repetitive movements such as hand-flapping or rocking, and strong reactions to sensory input like certain fabrics, lighting, or background noise. Noticing some of these traits does not mean a diagnosis is certain, only that an evaluation by a qualified professional is worth pursuing.

Getting an Evaluation in New Jersey

In New Jersey, autism evaluations are typically conducted by a developmental pediatrician, child psychologist, or through the state's Early Intervention System for children under age three. A diagnosis usually involves structured observation, developmental history, and standardized assessment tools rather than a single test. Families do not need a diagnosis in hand to start exploring ABA therapy; many providers, including Imagination ABA, can begin supporting a family during the evaluation process itself.
