Why A Timely Diagnosis is Crucial for Accessing ABA Therapy

At Imagination ABA Therapy, we talk to parents every day who are concerned about their child’s development. Many have noticed early signs of autism like speech delays, difficulty with social interaction, or strong reactions to sensory input, but aren't sure if they should pursue a formal diagnosis.
Some families wait, hoping things improve. Others seek help, only to find that their child’s doctor is reluctant to diagnose Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), even when the signs are clear.
But here's the truth: Getting an early and official ASD diagnosis is essential. Without it, your child may not be able to access life-changing therapies, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), especially when it comes to insurance coverage.
What Is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that impacts communication, social skills, behavior, and sensory processing. It is called a “spectrum” because it varies widely in how it affects individuals. Children with ASD may struggle with:
Verbal communication or delayed speech
Understanding social cues or maintaining eye contact
Repetitive behaviors or intense focus on specific topics
Sensory sensitivities (e.g., to lights, sounds, or textures)
Resistance to changes in routine or transitions
Why an Official ASD Diagnosis Is So Important
An official ASD diagnosis is required for insurance to approve and cover ABA therapy services in New Jersey. Without it, even if a child clearly benefits from behavioral therapy, families may face delays, denials, or high out-of-pocket costs.
At Imagination ABA Therapy, we work with all major insurance providers across New Jersey, but every plan requires diagnostic documentation that includes an ASD diagnosis (typically using ICD-10 code F84.0).
Understanding Parental Hesitancy Around Diagnosis
We understand why many parents hesitate:
Fear of stigma or labeling their child
Hope the child will “grow out of it”
Uncertainty about what a diagnosis really means
Not knowing where to start
But delaying the process can mean missing the window for early intervention, which has been shown to have the greatest impact when started between ages 2–6.
Getting an autism diagnosis is not about limiting your child—it’s about opening doors. It allows your child to access ABA therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, school supports, and more.
What If the Doctor Refuses to Diagnose ASD?
This is an issue we are seeing more frequently: physicians are hesitant to diagnose Autism, even when clear signs are present. Instead, they may give alternative labels such as:
ADHD
Sensory Processing Disorder
Global Developmental Delay
Anxiety or behavioral issues
While these diagnoses may sometimes be accurate, they do not qualify a child for insurance-covered ABA therapy unless accompanied by an ASD diagnosis.
At Imagination ABA Therapy, we believe this growing “ASD hesitancy” among providers is a disservice to families. The earlier a child receives treatment, the better the long-term outcomes. Holding back on a diagnosis due to fear, uncertainty, or provider bias is harmful.
If your child is showing signs of autism and your doctor is reluctant to provide a diagnosis, we recommend:
Seeking a second opinion from a developmental pediatrician, neurologist, or psychologist
Requesting a formal evaluation using standardized tools such as the ADOS-2
