How to Request an Evaluation

Any parent can request a special education evaluation from their child's school district in writing at any time, and you do not need a doctor's referral to do so. Once requested, the district generally has 90 days in New Jersey to complete the evaluation and hold an eligibility meeting. Put your request in writing (email is fine) and keep a copy for your records.

Keep everything in writing. Emails create a paper trail that protects you if timelines slip.

You don't have to sign on the spot. You can take the IEP home to review before agreeing to it.
